Earlier in the war nearly every member of the Fluvanna Artillery carried a large knife. While many were lost through use or the capture of the battery's baggage during the Gettysburg Campaign, some knives, especially those carried by mounted men (who kept their baggage strapped to saddles or off horse harness), likely remained in 1864.
Several Richmond and Petersburg area knife makers made similar styles of knives, some for sale to the Government, but most for sale to soldiers themselves. The most popular types included the small but practical "Camp Knife" (which we have done a Group Buy of before) and the much larger "Artillery Knife." The name was simply a marketing term, and many artillerymen (particularly officers) and even some infantrymen purchased them.
This reproduction of a Boyle & Gamble Artillery Knife will be made by Adam Daub to match the original, down to the B&G maker stamp we had made for our earlier run of Camp Knives. A sheath is available for an additional charge. While not cheap and certainly not required for the event, if you want a serious blade for your ANV artillery (or infantry) impression, here you go.
