Virtually every canteen stopper in the hobby is a reproduction of the type seen specifically on the large late war New York contracts that were sold as surplus at Bannerman’s Island for decades after the war.  Those that were seen for the majority of the war, and from different contractors, were much different.  These are all copied from originals to help defarb even otherwise “authentic” canteens.

-Stopper for 1861-1862 Philadelphia canteen.  Have a “smoothside” Philadelphia canteen (does not have a hole in the strap loop for a chain attachment)?  These canteens require a unique long, straight stopper with a spanner nut.  They barely fit, stick out quite a bit, and look silly, but they’re dead nuts correct for what seems to be the most common style of canteen in the hobby.

-Stopper for late 1862-1865 Philadelphia canteen.  Have a “bullseye” Philadelphia canteen?  These canteens require a short stopper with a full tin cap and spanner nut.

-Stopper for a New York canteen.  Have a “smoothside” New York canteen (has a hole in one strap loop for a chain attachment)?  These canteens require a short stopper with a domed tin cap and brass nut.
